Technology and Erosion of Tradition in Contemporary Indigenous Communities and Efforts to Revitalize Local Values

Abstract

Technological advancement has significantly impacted indigenous communities around the world. On one hand, technology offers ease of communication, access to information, and improvements in quality of life. On the other hand, its rapid penetration has become a major factor in the erosion of traditional practices and local values passed down through generations. This phenomenon is evident in the decline of cultural expressions, the shifting mindset of younger generations, and the weakening of indigenous social structures. This article explores how technology contributes to the erosion of tradition in contemporary indigenous communities and examines various efforts to revitalize local values, initiated by communities, traditional institutions, and educational sectors. Using a qualitative approach with case studies from selected indigenous groups, the findings reveal that collaboration between technology and indigenous wisdom can be an effective strategy to preserve traditions in an adaptive and contextualized manner. Thus, the revitalization of local values does not necessarily conflict with technological progress; instead, it can synergize within a sustainable cultural development framework.
